Photo specifications

The rules your photo has to meet.

These follow current U.S. Department of State requirements. Each photo is checked before you leave, and final acceptance is determined by the receiving agency.

Size

2 x 2 inches

Head measures between 1 and 1 3/8 inches from chin to crown, centered in the frame.

Background

Plain white or off-white

No shadows on the backdrop or on your face. A backdrop and lighting are provided.

Expression

Neutral, both eyes open

A natural smile is allowed, but a broad one is a common reason a photo gets rejected.

Clothing

Everyday clothes

No uniforms or camouflage. Avoid white tops, which blend into the background.

Glasses

Take them off

Eyeglasses have not been allowed since 2016, except with a signed medical statement.

Head coverings

Religious wear is fine

Permitted with a signed statement, as long as your full face is visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.

Recency

Within six months

The photo must reflect your current appearance, so an older print will not be accepted.

Infants and children

No other person in the frame

A baby can lie on a plain white sheet. No hands, no car seat, no toys. Eyes open is preferred but not required for infants.

Questions

Before your photo appointment.

Can I use these for a visa?

Photos may also be suitable for certain visa and identification applications. Requirements vary by agency and destination, so mention which country when you book.

What if my photo is not accepted?

Bring the notice and the photo can be reshot and reprinted at no additional charge. Requirements are checked on the spot to reduce the chance of that happening.

Can my child's passport paperwork be notarized here?

A minor's application usually needs both parents present, or a notarized consent form from the parent who cannot attend. That form can be notarized and the photo taken in the same visit.

Do I get a digital copy?

Yes, emailed to you at the correct dimensions for online renewals, alongside the two printed copies.
