Your appointment

What happens at a notary appointment.

California sets the procedure. Knowing it beforehand helps the appointment go smoothly.

One

Every signer is present

Each signer appears in person. Nobody can sign for someone who is not in the room.

Two

Identification is checked

An acceptable photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. The notary confirms each signer is signing willingly.

Three

The act is recorded

Date, time, type of act, the document, how you were identified, and your signature, entered in the notary journal.

Four

Witness, oath, or acknowledgment

Depending on the act, the notary witnesses your signature, takes your acknowledgment, or administers an oath.

Five

Certificate and seal

The notarial certificate is dated and signed, the commission expiry noted, and the seal applied. Then you are finished.

Please bring

Acceptable photo ID and your complete document

Do not sign the document beforehand unless you have been instructed to. The signer must personally appear before the notary.
