The approach is straightforward: verify identification properly, keep a complete journal, and educate on what a notarization does and does not involve. When a document is not ready to be notarized, you will hear that plainly rather than have it done and hoped for.

A notary public cannot provide legal advice, choose a notarial certificate for you, explain the legal effect of a document, or tell you how to fill it in. Doing any of that would be the unauthorized practice of law.
